The chalk cliffs of Ruegen are often
said to be the island´s
famous landmark. Forming an exceptionally beautiful landscape they are more or
less lined up along a coastline which extends over several
kilometres from the town of Sassnitz to the village of Lohme. The
white cliffs contrasting sharply with the green of the trees and
the deep blue of the Baltic Sea reach an average altitude of 100
metres. To cut a long story short: Just have a look at the

Apart from the chalk cliffs coastline, there is
also another picturesque landscape on Ruegen which offers its
visitors a fantastic view of an impressive steep coast. This spot
situated in the island´s most nothern area is called Cape Arkona.
A few metres away from the steep slopes you can see two ancient
lighthouses rising 20 and 40 metres up into the air. The red brick
one was designed by the renowned German architect Karl Friedrich
Schinkel.
The lookout platform of a nearby tower is the
best place to enjoy seeing Cape Arkona´s surrounding landscape
and seascape, both lighthouses and some noteworthy remains of
medieval fortifications which once protected a Slav castle. Two
nearby villages are also worth mentioning: The fishing
village of Vitt situated on the Baltic Sea shore undoubtedly
impresses visitors with its picturesque location and lovely
thatched houses. In the village of Altenkirchen, you can find
one of Ruegen´s most ancient and most beautiful medieval
churches.

Moenchgut is a peninsula, whose name
meaning monks´ estate refers to the fact that this region once
belonged to a Cistercian monastery near the city of Greifswald.
The peninsula covers the southeast of Ruegen and also
includes the seaside resorts of Baabe
and Goehren. The hilly and mostly wooded landscape is
divided by several bays and inlets. Apart from the seaside resorts
mentioned above,
there are also a lot of small villages, among which Groß Zicker
is probably the most impressive one. The sandy hill, at whose foot
the village of Klein Zicker is situated, offers the best
view of Moenchgut´s amazing and beautiful landscape.

In the centre of the island near the town of
Bergen, you can find two castles on top of hills which slope down to the shore of Ruegen´s large lagoon. Both castles,
which are only a few kilometres away from each other, were
built in the nineteenth century. The bigger one at the village of Ralswiek
looks like an old French castle. Although the other one at the
village of Lietzow is much smaller, it is not less beautiful. A tall tower
added to the main building can be doubtlessly called its most striking part of architecture.

The picturesque village of Lohme is
one of many holiday resorts on the island, but concerning its
location and places to swim and to bask in the sun it
considerably differs from all the other well-known
holiday resorts on Ruegen. One the one hand, it is situated about 50 metres above
sea level very close to the top of a steep and tall slope. On
the other hand, at
the bottom of this slope there is not a broad and sandy beach,
but a rather small stony beach and a yacht harbour. In a word,
Lohme is not a place for sun worshippers, but for nature lovers
and those people who like to enjoy a calm and quiet holiday at a
village off the beaten track surrounded by an an exceptionally
impressive countryside, for the chalk cliffs coastline is only a
stone´s throw away.
