Dear visitor, offering a lot of photos and
also some further
information this website would like to give you a small
introduction to the island of Ruegen which is the largest one of
all German islands. It is situated in the Baltic Sea opposite the
country´s northeastern mainland.

About 80000 people permanently live on the
island covering an area of almost 1000 square kilometres. There
are four towns:
The smallest and oldest one among them is the town of Garz,
which was founded already in the late Middle Ages. The capital and regional administration centre
of the island is Bergen.
As you might expect, it is both the biggest town and situated in
the centre of Ruegen. In past times, the town of Putbus was a
major seat
of royal power. To complete the list there is also a seaport town
called Sassnitz.
Ruegen mostly depends on tourism. Apart from
agriculture and harbour business there is not any other noteworthy
sector of the economy on the island. Along its eastern coastline holidaymakers will find many sandy beaches and a nearly
continuous succession of seaside resorts, among which
Binz and
Sellin are
the most frequented ones.
